Buildings and Resources
The primary school is accommodated in two buildings some 70m apart. The Infants are housed in a purpose-built, open-plan building circa 1970. The Juniors are in a building of more traditional design circa 1950. The school has its own kitchen supplying approximately 80-100 lunches daily, most other children have packed lunches. The school has two halls, resources room and a computer suite. It also has its own playing fields and large hard play areas. The school also has two Specialist Teaching Facilities for Speech and Language - one is for KS1 and one is for KS2 children.
The whole school has embarked on a project to make the school grounds into a resource providing practical first-hand experience for a variety of subjects. This has partly been achieved by constructing ponds, tree nurseries and wild flower areas and vegetable patch.
Relationships
The school and Bishopston Comprehensive School, to whom most children transfer at 11+, share a common campus. There is also a considerable degree of curricular liaison between the feeder Primary schools and the Secondary school.
The school enjoys excellent support from an active Home/School Association, who organise a range of events including educational evenings, fund-raising events and social events for both children and parents. Parental involvement is encouraged and many parents work alongside the children.
A wide variety of extra-curricular activities are made available to pupils including netball, rounders, rugby, soccer, swimming, athletics, tennis, gym, fishing, choir, recorders and cricket.
Curriculum
At present, the school is organised into ten classes. The Infants have a range of activities that give them a chance to adjust to the demands of school both socially and academically. A wide range of equipment and aids are used to help towards the achievement of these aims.
The children progress through the school, their work is organised on a flexible basis according to the needs of the task. High priority is given to the development of their mathematical and literacy skills. Topic work not only makes use of these skills, but also involves Historical, Geographical, Scientific, Articistic, Musical, Dramatic and Physical Education skills, using first-hand experience wherever possible.
